THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE: Through May 8 at Niagara University, Lewiston. The 19th century comic opera by Gilbert and Sullivan begins with the celebration of Frederic turning 21 and his surprising announcement of leaving the pirate-hood -- where he is an apprentice after a case of misunderstood instruction -- to devote his life to the extinction of pirates. But first, he would like to see a woman other than his nursemaid, who keeps insisting that she is the epitome of beauty. Frederic realizes he has been duped and the lunacy begins. LOVE LETTERS: 7:30 p.m. May 12 and 13, 2 p.m. May 14 and 15 at MuCCC, Multi-use Community Cultural Center, 142 Atlantic Ave., Rochester. Diane Chevron and Allan O’Grady Cuseo, a pair of Rochester community theater veterans, star in the Greater Rochester Repertory Company’s production of A.R. Gurney’s play which traces the life-long correspondence of staid yet very witty lawyer Andrew Makepeace Ladd III and the vivacious, scintillating and unstable artist Melissa Gardner.
