Airport gate remodeling progresses
The construction wall hiding the work should come down this week, revealing floor-to-ceiling windows, new carpet and fresh paint, said Dan Letellier, the airports executive director.It will be such a drastic difference. Its a lot more modern and its cleaner, Letellier said. Certainly, the carpeting and the ceiling and the wallpaper before was well-maintained, but it was well-worn. It was time for an update.
The work is part of a more than $5.3 million concourse renovation project that began last July and is expected to be complete by fall 2012.
Except for replacing the carpet about seven years ago, Letellier said its been about 20 years since the concourse area has been remodeled.
The renovations will increase gate seating by 40 percent and the gift shop, bar and restaurant areas will be expanded and renovated. Two new jetbridges, new restrooms and a business center also will be added.
Instead of the typical metal walls, the jetbridges feature glass walls, which Letellier said will add to the view from the floor-to-ceiling windows in the restaurant and gate areas.
Infrastructure including the roof, heating and cooling system, alarm system and sprinkler system also will be replaced or updated, Letellier said.
Work will begin on Gate 3 soon after Gates 1 and 2 open. At that time, the bar and restaurant area will be converted into a gift shop, Letellier said.
The new restaurant is expected to open by late June. With a full-service kitchen, it will be the first time passengers will have the option of hot food beyond the security line. Letellier said thats an amenity that only has been offered in the main floor restaurant.
Thats important to travelers such as Matthew Lawrence of Dalton, Mass., who had no choice but to leave the security area to get a hot meal Monday morning after his flight was delayed.
I love amenities once youre beyond security, said Lawrence, who was returning home after checking out land he inherited near Orange City, Iowa.
In addition to added food options, Letellier said the restaurant will accommodate about four times more people than the present second-floor bar/restaurant.
It looks really nice, and it will be a huge improvement, Letellier said.
Teri Ellis Schmidt, executive director of the Sioux Falls Convention and Visitors Bureau, said the renovations will improve a passengers flying experience.
