The Minnesota Vikings want to start top draft pick Christian Ponder at quarterback next season, but a prolonged NFL lockout could cause the team to seek a veteran starter at the position.
That's because the Vikings have been eager to prepare Ponder for the coming season but can't conduct workouts because of the lockout.
As to which veteran QB the Vikings will end up with, a little birdie says it will depend on who's available when a new labor agreement is reached.

While many of the earned-run averages among Twins pitchers have soared, reliever Glen Perkins' 0.51 stands out, especially considering the former Stillwater High School and Gophers left-hander has appeared in 16 games, second most on the staff.
Among reasons is that Perkins' fastball has dramatically increased in speed, from 88 mph last season to as high as an eye-popping 96 mph this season. He's averaging about 93 mph.
"It's just being healthy now," said Perkins, 28, who also has 16 strikeouts in 17-2/3 innings. "It's just getting past the shoulder stuff (recurring problems the last two seasons), and pitching in relief - not throwing as much."
As a starter in 2008, Perkins finished 12-4 with a 4.41 ERA, then struggled the ensuing two seasons, during which he was a combined 7-8 with a cumulative 5.84 ERA. This season, he's 0-0.
Alexandria High grad (1975) Gary Serum pitched for the Twins in 1977 through 1979, winning 10 games and losing 12. He had a best season of 9-9 in 1978.
Serum, though, didn't accrue the required four years of major league service that was required then to qualify for baseball's pension program. He played for approximately 2-1/2 seasons.
A recent joint agreement between Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association will allow Serum and many other major leaguers who played between 1947 and 1979 but didn't attain four years of service an annual pension of up to $10,000.
Author Doug Gladstone in his recent book, "A Bitter Cup of Coffee; How MLB The Players Association Threw 874 Retirees A Curve," crusaded for the left-out players.
Serum, now 54 and owner of Serum's Good Time Emporium in Anoka, is grateful.
