Antique shops provide adventure in Eastern Kentucky
the narrow, winding roads lead to a small village to another in this part of the country. Each city has its own little post office proudly displaying the American flag and the local variety store selling onion bulbs along the gum chewing. Locals flock to bars for family dairy slaw dog (hot dog with coleslaw) and milkshakes and a shop to speak with men before the grocery store on hot summer days.
Although the scenes above could easily be found in the coastal villages of Maine and the German cities of Wisconsin, the country roads lined with trees are right in our backyard, in the Appalachian communities in eastern United Kentucky.
As a city girl who married a guy from scream, I fell in love with the picturesque mountain villages. Today, I aspire to our weekends in the hills of eastern Kentucky.
One of the best ways I found to explore this area is hopping from one antique store to another, which punctuate the rural landscape. They are off the beaten track, some of them known only to locals, and are full of treasures unlikely to be found in shops in the city.
A weekend is the perfect amount of time for meandering through the shops, eating local dishes and learn about this rich culture.Make sure you leave the house with a cargo little as possible because you will need space in the car to take home your treasures.
Here are my suggestions for a day of shopping in Eastern Kentucky:
On Saturday morning, starting on I-64 East to Mountain Parkway risk. Continue past danger (for now). You will pass through cities like Vicco and Happy on your way to Whitesburg.
Your first stop is in Pine Mountain Co-op. The large tepee beside the shop is a dead giveaway that you're there.
For nearly 20 years, this antique and craft co-op has been a fixture in Whitesburg.Thirty volunteer members to keep the co-op running and full of antiques and crafts. The porch is filled with original furnishings altered, while the interior walls are covered with glassware and quilts, tables full of dishes, pots and linens.
Anne Bradley organizes volunteers and is often in the studio to offer her knowledge of events and local attractions. You can also find lots of tourist information at reception.
After shopping, have lunch at Pine Mountain Grill across the street. The restaurant has its own gift shop with new blankets, pottery and handbags.You can not go wrong ordering the base area, bean soup and corn bread, or roast beef open face. They are both delicious, filling and cheap.
