Packers' Rodgers hopes his celebrity will bring support for MACC Fund
Since winning Super Bowl XLV in February and being named the most valuable player of the game, Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers' life has changed most in one specific area.
He's a bigger celebrity now, recognized almost everywhere he goes.
The 27-year-old hoped to channel some of that recognition into a successful fundraising event for the Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer (MACC Fund).
It seems like whatever challenge Rodgers takes on, he succeeds.
Last year, 180 people attended the inaugural "Evening with Aaron Rodgers" event, raising $35,000 for MACC Fund research.
Tuesday night, 670 people came to the Hyatt Regency in downtown Milwaukee for a reception, dinner and presentation with Rodgers in the sold-out event. Though final numbers aren't available yet, the evening had the potential to raise more than $100,000.
"The MACC Fund is just so honored to have an opportunity to have a relationship with Aaron Rodgers, whose excellence off the field even exceeds his magnificence on it," said MACC Fund director John Cary.
The MACC Fund was founded in 1976 by Jon McGlocklin, the former Milwaukee Bucks player and current analyst on the team's television broadcasts. The organization hosts several fundraisers during the year to benefit pediatric cancer and blood disorder research at the Medical College of Wisconsin, Children's Hospital of Wisconsin and the University of Wisconsin. The MACC Fund also supports children and families battling childhood cancer.
The MACC Fund has raised $39 million overall - often one pledge at a time.
An event like this, with the support of Rodgers, was an eye-opening gala in the Grand Ballroom. It made an impression on Rodgers.
"That's what tonight is all about, making a difference," said Rodgers. "When you accomplish what you set out to - winning the Super Bowl, a goal I had since I was a little kid - you start to look at the big picture. How can you make a difference? And for me, the MACC Fund is a tangible way that I can make a difference by lending my support, my name."
Rodgers answered questions from reporters before the dinner and said he didn't want to talk about the National Football League lockout.
He did say he relishes the opportunity for the Packers to repeat as Super Bowl champs. He added that he didn't expect his offense to be fortified with three high picks in the draft a few weeks ago. The Packers took Mississippi State tackle Derek Sherrod, Kentucky receiver Randall Cobb and Hawaii running back Alex Green in the first three rounds.
