A Contested Vision

The Nantu Wildlife Reserve is located in northern Sulawesi’s Minehasa Peninsula, in Gorontalo Province. Sulawesi is among the largest of Indonesia’s some seventeen thousand islands. Its shape is bizarre: a sinuous sprawling monkey, with lavish tail, poised to leap the straits of Makassar. Sulawesi lies to the north of Bali and Lombok and to the east of Borneo.Alfred Russell Wallace, the explorer of the nineteenth century English and natural sciences of the vast expertise, has spent much time in the northern peninsula of Sulawesi, casting his curiosity and observation particularly acute in such a way that its spirit apprehended "Darwin's theory of evolution" and regardless of if possible before Darwin. Dr. Lynn Clayton is the founder and director of Nantu.It was working twenty-three years to train and protect the wildlife. The babirusa, for example, occurs only in northern Sulawesi and Nantu is the largest of its range remains intact. Other endemic species emblematic of northern Sulawesi include: Heck's macaque, and the anoa maleo.

Lynn invited me to visit the survey Nantu potential to recover timber.Lynn wonders if the recovery operations around Nantu wood could create stable jobs that support local vision of conservation and restoration, as well as generate income for work consistently under-funded Nantu. She requested a feasibility study. A few days before I visited Nantu I met Lynn Clayton at Hotel Santika, Jakarta. Lynn was preparing to visit his family in England and could not be present during my visit to Nantu. Lynn looked exhausted. She informed me that, while Nantu is on paper a strictly protected wildlife reserve (Suaka Margasatwa), several pressures challenge Nantu and erode its physical integrity. Artisan gold-miners, loggers and poachers, rattan-gatherers, slash-and-burn farmers: all are making illegal incursions into Nantu.
