EDITORIAL: Speed Guntersville state park repairs

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama Alabama state _ 22-site park system operates on narrow margins. Only a handful of the largest supply the bulk of his $ 32 million operating budget.

Last month's devastating tornado, which closed several state parks whose main income producers Lake Guntersville State Park, could push the margins to the edge.

Restoration of Lake Guntersville Park to full operation should be a state priority. The park campground sustained heavy damage as well. No one was injured, although park reports tell of campers taking cover in bathhouses as trees crashed over them. Ten of the 15 cabins, the pro shop and golf course also suffered heavy damage. Thirty of the hotel's 118 rooms sustained major water damage when the roof on one wing was peeled away.

Unknown to many taxpayers, the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources receives no support from the state's General Fund. Instead, state parks are funded through special revenue sources that include some federal money, cigarette taxes and license fees. The bulk of the parks' budget, though, comes from user-generated funds in the form of entrance, rental, lodging, golf and other recreational fees.

So when a resort park like Lake Guntersville goes offline, the entire system is threatened financially.

State parks officials hope to partially reopen it soon and bring more of the park online in time for the heavy season beginning Memorial Day weekend.
